GRANT EDGARER – President, At All American Record Management Grant Ekhardt is the president at All American Record Management. He started his career in the music industry as a touring musician with bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. He joined Black Label Society, the company which signed many of the legendary heavy metal bands of the ’70s. After leaving Black Label, he joined Astral Projections and worked with such popular heavy metal bands as Black Label Society, Metallica and Dream Theater.
From there, he formed a band called Earthgore with members from the same groups, as well as Kurt Ballou and David Ellefson. They went on to play with many different groups in the ’80s.
When Earthgore broke up, Ekhardt formed All American Record Management with Kurt Ballou but soon left after a few months. Instead, he decided to form another band, with Earthgore bassist Bruce Spizer and former Earthgore drummer Nick Zappelli. This time, the band lasted for more than one year. The band even played an entire European tour, with some of the biggest names in heavy metal in attendance.
After the band dissolved, Ekhardt worked as the head of music at Atlantic Records, where he met up with his friend and fellow earthgore bass player, Tony Iommi. Together, they formed Black Sabbath. With the help of drummer Bill Ward, they recorded their first album, ‘Paranoid.’ Their first album was also the first one to be recorded using Pro Tools, a pioneering software program developed by Japanese company Apple Computers.
Black Sabbath released a second album, ‘Lord of the Rings,’ but the band broke up soon after. However, they reformed again to play concerts around Europe and the US, before finally releasing their fifth album, ‘Warrior,’ which is still popular today.
Earthgore also managed to play with many other heavy metal musicians, including Kurt Cobain, John Entwistle and Ozzy Osbourne. However, he was always overshadowed by the other two because of his relatively modest status. In fact, Ekhardt admitted to liking playing bass with other heavier bands, including Black Sabbath and Metallica.
Even though he left earthgore in the mid-1990s, he later returned to form Black Sabbath in 2020 with the addition of bassist Ashley Owens and vocalist Eddie Van Halen. The band quickly became a big hit in the United Kingdom and eventually sold millions of albums around the world. The band also managed to record their sixth album, ‘The Last Hero,’ which is scheduled for release later this year.
Earthgore has been involved with various businesses as an entrepreneur, including publishing and recording, but most recently, he has worked as a music manager. for the rock band, Metallica.
